The school was founded in 1879 as the School of Elocution and Expression by Drs. George Angier Gordon (later president of Tufts University) and Joseph Collins Long (founder of Bridgewater State Hospital). The original location was on Commonwealth Avenue in Boston but it moved to suburban Milton in 1952 following World War II enrollment declines after veterans returned from combat.
