The Coalition of African American Nurses, Inc. (CAAN) is a professional organization that seeks to inform and educate nurses about the unique needs of Black patients and to increase the number of Blacks in nursing professions. CAAN was founded by 15 African-American Registered Nurses from across Illinois who came together as an informal group in January 1977.

The Coalition of African American Nurses, Inc. (CAAN) is the largest association of Black nurses in the U.S., representing more than 100,000 members and affiliates nationwide. CAAN was founded in 1978 to create a voice for Black nurses and address their unique needs as they relate to health care systems reform and quality improvement efforts; nursing education; practice environments; workforce diversity; professional development and licensure/certification requirements; research on issues confronting African-American nurses, health disparities affecting minorities with respect to healthcare access and outcomes, institutional racism within the system that impacts minority populations disproportionately compared with others.

Coalition of African American Nurses, Inc. was founded in 1969 by a group of nurses who wanted to make sure that all people had equal access to quality healthcare and education. Our organization is committed to improving the health status of communities through culturally competent care, advocacy for equitable policies, and scholarships for nursing students at historically black colleges and universities.

The Coalition of African American Nurses, Inc. (CAAN) is a professional organization that promotes the advancement of nursing education and practice among African Americans in order to promote health equity for all people. CAAN was founded by a group of nurses who believed that their skills were not being fully utilized as they desired. They wanted to be able to provide better care for their patients and community members. The founders created this organization with the goal of improving access to quality healthcare for communities traditionally underserved by the medical profession, such as those in urban areas or from minority populations.
