Established in 1862 by Swedish immigrants to the United States and Canada, Gustavus Adolphus College has been recognized as one of America's premier colleges for undergraduate education since its founding. The school was named for King Gustav IV Adolf of Sweden, who supported an American Lutheran minister's quest to establish a new educational institution that would train clergymen in both theology and secular subjects so they could serve their congregations more effectively.
