JF Drake's roots date back to the late 1800s when it was founded as a private institution called "The Institute." In 1969, the school became part of the state community college system and was renamed "J F Drake State Junior College". It adopted its current name in 1989 to honor John Francis Drake Jr., who served on our Board from 1961 until his death in 1986.
