The college was established in 1963 as an extension branch of Phoenix College and became a separate institution in 1965. Around 330 students enrolled in classes for the first semester. Today, MCC is the largest of the 10 community colleges located in the Maricopa County Community College District with an average annual enrollment exceeding 25,000 students at its main campus locations (northeast and southwest) and several additional locations throughout Mesa.
