Murray State University is one of the eight public 4-year colleges in Kentucky. The campus is located in Murray town. According to the NCES 2017 report, a total of 10,012 students attend the school. In the 2017 fall enrollment, 1,443 freshman students enrolled, and approximately 1,111 students returned for their sophomore year (which makes its freshman retention rate 77%). Every year 49% of the graduating class students graduate in 150% of the time it takes to complete their studies. Murray State University's in-state tuition for the 2017-2018 academic year was $7,656, and fees were $1,164. Out-of-state tuition and fees for the same period were $22,656 and $1,164 respectively.

The institution began as a normal school in 1922 through funding by Eli Murray (1865-1956). It was later renamed the "Murray Normal College" when it became part of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools in 1924. The college became "Murray State Teachers College" following enactment of legislation on April 16th 1927 that authorized substitution of "Teachers" for "Normal." Finally, on March 1st 1930, the name was changed to its current designation: "Murray State College."
