Muskingum University is one of the seventy private, not-for-profit 4-year colleges in Ohio. The campus is located in New Concord town. According to the NCES 2017 report, a total of 2,369 students attend the school. In the 2017 fall enrollment, 384 freshman students enrolled, and approximately 288 students returned for their sophomore year (which makes its freshman retention rate 75%). Every year 48% of the graduating class students graduate in 150% of the time it takes to complete their studies. Muskingum University's in-state tuition for the 2017-2018 academic year was $26,900, and fees were $746. Out-of-state tuition and fees for the same period were $26,900 and $746 respectively.

Founded in 1837 by the Presbyterian Church as Muskingum College, it was renamed to reflect its current broad focus on both liberal arts and professional studies programs.
