Established in 1857 by Bishop John Henry Hobart Brown as St. Mary's Academy, it was originally an all-girls boarding school. In 1889, it became affiliated with Trinity Episcopal Church (now Trinity Cathedral), which served as its sponsor until 1961 when it formally separated from that organization to become an independent institution under lay control.
In 1965, then-president George Dennison made some changes to the curriculum to make it more compatible with contemporary society; this led to a change.
