Northern was founded as an academy for training teachers on October 14, 1899; it became a junior college in 1929; and gained four-year status with its first baccalaureate degree program offered in 1947. The school's name comes from its location: northern Michigan—close to Lake Superior and 15 miles south of Canada's Upper Peninsula where Ontario borders Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, Illinois and Indiana.
