Founded on July 1, 1891 as a preparatory school for West Texas children with no access to higher education, Odessa College was founded by a group of citizens led by Dr. Rufus Cady and Reverend J.M. Peeples; its first building was at Fifth and Grant Streets downtown where Central Junior High School now stands (now known as Midland College). In 1908 the college moved to East Thirteenth Street between Andrews Avenue and Broadway.
