The school was founded as "Rockford Junior College" and later renamed to "Rock Valley Community College." It became a member of the Illinois community college system on July 1, 2013.

In terms of tuition cost for academic year 2017-2018, out-of-state tuition costs $15000 per student while state residents pay only $8500.
