University History: In 1957 the Fort Smith Junior College was founded to provide higher education opportunities to residents in northeastern Oklahoma and southeastern Kansas. A year later it became known as the Northeast Regional Institute which provided classes at four separate locations in Missouri, Illinois, Indiana and Kansas until 1967 when it merged with the Southwest Oklahoma State College (formerly Southwestern Oklahoma).
