The University of Louisville is a public institution founded in 1798. It is the first public university owned by a city in the US and one of the first west of the Allegheny Mountains. The university is heavily invested in medical research, becoming the first to successfully complete a self-contained artificial heart transplant surgery and a successful hand transplantation.
