University of Memphis

The University of Memphis is a public institution in Memphis, Tennessee. It is also part of the State University and Community College System of Tennessee. There are ten campuses in this system, including the Memphis campus. The University of Memphis was established in 1912 as the West Tennessee Normal School. It became the Memphis State College in 1941 and achieved university status in 1957. The campus is about five miles east of the downtown area in the University District and has an enrollment exceeding 20,000 students with an endowment surpassing $200 million dollars .
