The school's founding was made possible by a $1 million gift from Cornelius Vanderbilt (1849) and it opened its doors on September 24, 1875 as part of what later became known as the Vanderbilt University Consortium. In 1971, under President James Hulen's leadership, Vanderbilt began to offer graduate education for the first time with a Master's program in business administration (MBA). Over the next two decades, several other graduate programs were added: Master of Divinity (MDiv), Master of Engineering Management Program (MEM), Doctorate
