Vincennes University is a public university in Jasper, Indiana. It was founded by the Northwest Ordinance of 1787 and opened for instruction on January 23, 1801 as Vincennes College. The school was renamed as Vincennes University in 1807 after it received its state charter from President Thomas Jefferson. The town of Vincennes is named after Fort Sackville which had been recently captured from the British during the American Revolutionary War when General George Rogers Clark took possession of it on February 25, 1779; however, historians believe this fort may have been called Fort Vincennes at some point before then.
