Example 1

Calculate an IV pump rate

Order: infuse 1,000 mL over 8 hours.

1,000 mL ÷ 8 hr = 125 mL/hr

The unrounded and rounded answers are both 125 mL/hr.

Example 2

Calculate a gravity drip rate

Order: infuse 1,000 mL over 8 hours with 15 gtt/mL tubing.

(1,000 × 15) ÷ 480 = 31.25 gtt/min

Because drops are counted as whole numbers, the result rounds to 31 gtt/min.

Example 3

Calculate infusion completion time

A 1,000 mL bag is running at 125 mL/hr.

1,000 mL ÷ 125 mL/hr = 8 hr

If it starts at 22:00, it is estimated to finish at 06:00 the following day.

Example 4

Calculate volume remaining

A 1,000 mL bag runs at 125 mL/hr for 2 hours.

1,000 − (125 × 2) = 750 mL

About 250 mL has infused and 750 mL remains.
