Founded in 1991 by six local business and community leaders, it was the state's first new public university since 1975. The campus is located on 180 acres of land just off Interstate 75 near downtown Fort Myers. The school has an acceptance rate of 83% (or 14,965 total enrollment) with 2,626 freshmen enrolled this year and about 2,075 returning students for their sophomore year; which means its freshman retention rate is 79%. In fall 2017 alone 48% of the graduating class graduated within 150% time it takes to complete their studies FGCU offers over 60 undergraduate majors and about 25 master's degree programs as well as doctoral.
