George Mason University is a public research university in Fairfax, Virginia. Established in 1949 as an extension of the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, it has become an independent institution since 1972. George Mason offers bachelor's degrees, master's degrees and doctoral degrees through its six schools (Arts & Sciences; Business; Design; Education; Law and Public Policy).
GMU operates four campuses outside the United States: two in China (a joint venture with Tsinghua University), one in Turkey, and one at Quai de l'Orsay in Paris (a cooperative venture with Sciences Po). GMU also operates a study-abroad program called "Semester at Sea" which takes U.S. undergraduates.
