Since 1972, the Manhattan Adult Learning Center has been empowering adults to achieve their educational goals. The center offers classes in reading and writing for ESL learners, GED preparation courses, citizenship classes, as well as a variety of other academic enrichment programs for students at any level. We also offer services to help our students find employment or transportation.
The Manhattan Adult Learning Center, often abbreviated as MALC, is a non-profit organization in New York City that provides free adult education and GED preparation for adults. Established in 1947 by the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee and others, it was originally known as the Educational Alliance. It is based at 40 West 16th Street on Fifth Avenue near Union Square in Manhattan.
MALC offers classes to prepare students for college entrance exams such as SAT or ACT; English language courses; computer literacy instruction; citizenship training and U.S. history lessons among other subjects.
MALS is the only public high school in Manhattan, New York that provides a free education for adults who want to earn their diploma or GED. The program has been recognized as one of the best adult learning centers in the country and was awarded by President Obama with an America’s Promise Award in 2009. MALS offers flexible schedules so students can work around their responsibilities at home and elsewhere. Classes are designed to be challenging yet nurturing, helping each student build confidence and grow academically.
