Stony Brook University was founded in 1957 as the State University College of Long Island, a public liberal arts college. It became one of New York’s eleven state universities with its name changed to Stony Brook University in 1966. The university is named after the geographic area called Stony Brook, which runs through it and got its name from Dutch settlers who used stones to build houses along that area. Today, SBU serves over 24,000 undergraduate students and 5,500 graduate students on a 1,300 acre campus with four major research centers: Health Sciences Center; Institute for Advanced Computational Science; Institute for Marine and Coastal Sciences; School of Nursing.
