The university was founded in 2004 to help increase the availability of qualified medical professionals in the area. During the first year of classes, 79 medical students enrolled. The university now serves more than 1,300 students annually. The primary fields of study include osteopathic medicine, physical therapy assistant studies (PTA), physician assistant studies (PA), occupational therapy (OT) nursing .The university operates two colleges: Touro College for Osteopathic Medicine and Health Sciences and Touro University College of Allied Health Professions
