Founded in 1922 as an agricultural teaching school with six faculty members and fourteen students, it was originally called Agricultural College at Fairbanks under the joint sponsorship of the federal government and the Territory of Alaska. The name became simply "College" by 1929; that year also saw a new president appointed to replace retiring professor Raymond Calkins. By 1931 its enrollment had grown to 134 students, all but one from Alaska.
