
Virginia State University
Virginia State University is a public university located in Petersburg, Virginia. The campus opened its doors in 1882 and has remained true to its original mission of providing affordable higher education opportunities for Virginians. It was established under the provisions of the Smith-Lever Act of 1914 by an agreement between the Commonwealth of Virginia and the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). In 1977 VSU became one of 16 four-year colleges in Virginia which are independent from any other state agency or department, supported by tax funds appropriated by both houses of the General Assembly, and overseen by faculty and administration as well as a board appointed jointly by those two bodies.
Virginia State University's in-state tuition for the 2017-2018 academic year was $5,327, and fees were $3,399. Out-of-state tuition and fees for the same period were $15,442 and $4,130 respectively.
