How to analyse an ECG rhythm strip

Inspect timing
Scan the whole strip, then compare each R–R interval for a complex that arrives early or late.
Determine regularity
Decide whether the rhythm is regular, irregular, or regular except for a premature beat.
Calculate rates
Measure atrial and ventricular rates separately when P waves and QRS complexes do not match.
Assess P waves
Compare shape, direction, consistency, and the relationship of each P wave to the QRS.
Measure intervals
Use the ECG grid to measure PR interval and QRS duration before choosing a diagnosis.
Interpret last
Name the underlying rhythm first, then add the premature or conduction finding.
