The SMCH Resource Nurse (RSN) Class is a leadership-focused training course for Stanford Medicine Children’s Health employees preparing for the resource nurse or charge nurse role.

About the class

This course trains new resource nurses and charge nurses in the leadership responsibilities involved in operating a unit. The class covers charge nurse responsibilities, mitigation of difficult situations, de-escalation, fiscal responsibility, staffing decisions, communication, and the RSN role as a nursing leadership position.

The course is intended to ensure that new resource nurses receive appropriate preparation before stepping into the role.

A minimum of 4 students is required to confirm the class. If the minimum is not met, the class may be cancelled and registered students may be offered the option to transfer to another class.

Learning objectives

Upon completion of the class, participants should be able to:

  • Differentiate between general nursing duties and leadership responsibilities
  • Identify characteristics of effective leadership in a clinical setting
  • Recognise early warning signs of potential workplace violence
  • Use de-escalation techniques to help maintain a safe environment
  • Use patient acuity data and institutional staffing tools to support evidence-based staffing decisions
  • Apply fiscal responsibility when evaluating staffing levels
  • Use the Wheel of Mindfulness tool to identify personal barriers to communication
  • Manage discomfort associated with giving difficult feedback
  • Use the SBIA model to deliver clear, actionable, and professional feedback to colleagues

Cancellation and refund information

Full refunds are available for cancellations made at least 2 weeks before the class date.

No refunds are available for cancellations less than 5 days before the class date.

For Stanford Children’s Health employees, no-shows or cancellations on the day of class are considered unexcused absences, and managers will be notified. A medical note may be required in the event of illness or medical emergencies.

If CPEI cancels the class, registered participants will be notified with as much advance notice as possible, and a full refund will be given.
