About the course
The Phototherapy Course is designed to equip learners with the knowledge and skills needed to safely and effectively administer phototherapy treatments, including:
- NBUVB
- PUVA
- UVA1
The course also covers how to monitor patient responses and manage potential side effects. On completion, learners are expected to undergo further competency assessment in their own workplace.
Course format
This course is delivered in a blended-learning format.
Pre-attendance online learning
Learners receive access to online learning materials through a bespoke learning platform. The virtual learning includes:
- Interactive lectures
- Educational videos
- A multiple-choice knowledge test
The platform becomes available three weeks before the face-to-face course and remains accessible for one month after completion, allowing learners to consolidate and revisit the material.
Face-to-face practical learning
The in-person day includes:
- Live presentations
- An expert panel session for questions
- Workshops and demonstrations in the phototherapy department
The teaching programme includes morning lectures followed by practical workshops and live demonstrations later in the day.

It is especially suitable for those who are new to phototherapy or early in their development of phototherapy skills.
The course supports best practice in line with the British Association of Dermatologists Staff Training and Education Standards, which recommend that phototherapy clinicians attend a phototherapy course at least once every three years.

- MPD testing

- UVA1 administration
- PUVA initiation and administration
A course certificate is provided upon completion.
Employer funding process
If your Trust or employer is funding your place on the Phototherapy Course 2027, a purchase order (PO) is required from your workplace finance department.

- The course fee: £595 per person VAT exempt

Once the PO is received, St John's Derm Academy will invoice the Trust or employer, and registration instructions will then be provided.
If a Trust does not have Guy's and St. Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust on its requisition system, the organiser has additional bank details available through its official funding guidance.
